The reason?
Its simple.

So while at Fight Grandmaster and Fight Spirit a heavenly could allow him to combat even 2-3 classes above at Fight Ancestor and Fight Venerate an extra heavenly flame might only allow him to fight people 2-3 STARS (not classes) above ! !

So he is actually metting people way way stronger compared to the now him, as opposed to in the past, where their cultivation wasn't THAT much further from himself then but they were classed as being many stars and classes further compared to now.

Also remember that Xiao Yan "flame mantra" qi technique increases in class from like black, to yellow to heavenly, to Godly or whatever they were called. This is unique to his qi technique ONLY. So meeting opponents of higher cultivation rank means they do not only have more higher of higher rank (quality) but they also have better qi technique couple with higher class QI ATTACKS and maybe even weapons/armor ! Also higher rank cultivators have MORE fight experience and are more cunning and prepared as opposed to the arrogant amateurs he met in his home town !

I just binged like 20 episodes from 55 to 80 and I thought yun shun fight would be minimum 10 episodes, nah they were done with the whole misty cloud sect eradication in like 4-5 episodes haha. another 1-2 episodes and he underwent the Fight Spirit > Fight Emperor cutlivation which in the novel took 1 year of cultivation ! So the war between Jia Ma Empire and the other 3 which Medusa alone held the front last a couple of months at that point !

The anime spend like 2 episodes form the point XIao Yan left to the mountains with Zi Yan and Medusa to breakthrough and up until he came back and saved Medusa in that fight. One of those episodes was pretty much filler and the whole 1 year cultivation breaktrhough was done in a few scenes :)

SO indeed, anime watch might feel that the story does not have substance and the author just decides who wins and looses on the wim with no logic but that is not the case. As busy as Xiao Yan is, for him to reserve 1 whole continuous year away is not easy to come by. Otherwise it would have been very easy to cultivate a little longer before fighting Yun Shun to ensure success in the fight.
